Pentathlon row could send Aussie Darby home

Evening Standard   1 Aug 2008

Angie Darby will discover next Wednesday whether she will be kicked out of the Olympics in a qualifying row just two days before the opening ceremony.

The Greek pentathlon federation will urge the Court of Arbitration for Sport to give the Australian's place to their competitor Donna Vakalis. Greece claim Darby failed to meet the full requirements of the five-event modern pentathlon when she qualified for Beijing by winning the Oceania championship in Tokyo.

The fourth of the disciplines - show jumping - wasn't contested because of equine influenza in Japan.

The same argument was used last month by Britain to have Australia's Alex Parygin deselected by the CAS for Beijing in favour of Nick Woodbridge, who was next in the world rankings.

Darby, 21, has not given up hope of competing in the event three weeks today despite her compatriot missing out.

"It's a rollercoaster but even without this, the Olympics would have been a rollercoaster anyway," she said. "Everyone is really supportive and wants to help. I'm trying not to let it get to me."
