Tyson fit for the showdown

World champion Tyson Gay today confirmed he would be fit to battle for the title of world's fastest man in Beijing, thus setting up the prospect of the greatest 100 metres race in history.

The American, who has been recovering from a strained hamstring, insisted that he was in shape to go head-to-head with the top Jamaican duo, Asafa Powell and world record holder Usain Bolt, in what promises to be the highlight of the entire Olympics in 10 days time.

"When I step on the line in Beijing, don't worry," Gay said in a statement released by his management company. "I'll be ready to go."

Fears had been raised that Gay might not make the Games after he pulled out of a race with Powell at the London Grand Prix recently but today's statement said he had returned to high-level training under his co-coach Jon Drummond at his German training base.

The world champion at both 100 and 200 metres, Gay will run only the 100 and 4x100 metres relay at the Games because his injury in the second round of the trials meant he missed out on selection in the half-lap event.
