Berbatov on brink of United transfer

Manchester United are closing in on a deal that should finally see Dimitar Berbatov leave Tottenham for around £28million.

The striker has become increasingly desperate to move to Old Trafford and is expected to get his wish. Tottenham reported United to the Premier League over their pursuit of the Bulgarian international last month, but that won't prevent the transfer from going ahead.

Spurs are believed to be close to signing an additional striker and that is why they are now ready to let him go, although the club are determined to get the best possible price for Berbatov.

They have been pursuing Zenit St Petersburg forward Andrei Arshavin and Spartak Moscow star Roman Pavlyuchenko, and head coach Juande Ramos still has a large transfer fund.

Ramos publicly declared after the 5-0 win over Roma on Sunday that he hoped Berbatov would stay, but it is not a view shared by everyone behind the scenes.

The 27-year-old is believed to have upset people within the club for his attitude during pre-season and was substituted at half-time against Roma following a lacklustre display.

The form of Darren Bent, who has scored 13 goals in pre-season, has also helped convince the hierarchy that he won't be missed.

Meanwhile, keeper Cesar Sanchez has arrived in London to undergo a medical at Spurs before completing his move from Real Zaragoza.
