John Terry
Captain Terry? Chelsea man wants to wear England armband again

Terry: Let me keep England captaincy

John Terry today urged England coach Fabio Capello to make him his England captain.

Capello will announce who will get the job permanently before the friendly against the Czech Republic a week today.

The Chelsea defender was made skipper by Steve McClaren in 2006 when David Beckham stepped down after the World Cup.

But he has led the side only once since Capello took over last December, with the Italian rotating the armband on a game-by-game basis.

Manchester United centrehalf Rio Ferdinand is the favourite, yet Terry is desperate to have the honour once again.

He said: "Of course I want the captaincy. I've been awfully lucky to get the armband in the past - that's something that will never leave me, those memories will live with me forever.

"I had it for a short amount of time and not many games, but I will never forget the day Steve McClaren made me captain and it meant an awful lot. I want those memories back and I want to lead the team out at Wembley. It's the dream we all have as kids.

"I'm sure whoever Mr Capello announces as the captain, that person will have the best days of his life in football.

"But if it's not me, I will shake their hand and wish them well."

Terry was speaking at the launch of a Premier League campaign which aims to improve the respect shown by players to referees next season.

He added: "I hold my hands up for overstepping the mark. I think every player in the Premier League can say that, but this is a step forward in the right direction."
