Caitlin comes sixth after final effort

Evening Standard   13 Aug 2008

Britain's swimmers had a disappointing morning in the pool, missing out on the medals in two finals.

Caitlin McClatchey finished sixth in the women's 200 metres freestyle final in 1min 57:65sec. Drawn in lane one, the 24-year-old from Portsmouth fell behind immediately in an event won by Italian Federica Pellegrini in a new world record of 1min 54:82sec.

In the 4x200m men's relay, Britain were fourth after the first leg by Andy Hunter. Hopes of a medal were raised briefly when on the final length Ross Davenport edged into bronze position before slipping back on the closing length to finish sixth.

Britain's Jemma Lowe just failed to qualify for tomorrow morning's 200m butterfly final despite coming third in the first of the semis. The 18-year-old was under world record time halfway through the race and led at the final turn before coming third.

But in the second semi-final six swimmers were faster than her and she missed out by 0.14 seconds.

In the second semi-final of the 200m butterfly, Ellen Gandy, the 17-year-old who lives in Australia but was born in Bromley, was never in contention for a qualifying place and finished last in 2min 10:60sec. The Water Cube's ability to produce world records was proved once again in the women's 200m individual medley when Australian Stephanie Rice broke her own time in 2min 8:45sec. In the men's 100m freestyle semi-final the records continued to tumble when a new best was set in the first semi, only to be beaten within in the second by Australian Eamon Sullivan in 47.05sec.
