Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon is to hold talks with Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon over the transfer of Robinho

Monte Carlo or bust for Blues and Spurs

The presence of Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester United in Monte Carlo over the next two days is expected to lead to three of the biggest transfers of the summer being finalised.

For the past eight weeks, all the signs have been that Robinho would move to Stamford Bridge for £29.5million; Andrei Arshavin to Spurs for £17m and Dimitar Berbatov to champions United for £28m.

All three deals could be thrashed out in the principality, with Europe's leading clubs gathering in Monaco for today's Champions League group stage draw and tomorrow's UEFA Cup draw.

Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon will hold direct talks with Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon this afternoon and is confident his club will succeed with a bid for Brazil international Robinho.

But Madrid are having problems finding a replacement for the striker. David Villa has signed a new contract to stay at Valencia, while Villarreal winger Santi Cazorla also wants to remain where he is and Ajax want too much money for Klass-Jan Huntelaar.

Kenyon said: "Calderon will be at the draw and I expect to meet with him. There are no hitches. This is a big player from a big club. Robinho will be the first young player we have signed from a club the size of Real Madrid."

The Chelsea chief confirmed the Blues are looking to trim the squad in light of the imminent arrival of Robinho and the club are set to make a loss of £11m on Shaun Wright-Phillips, who is set to complete a £10m return to Manchester City.

It is understood he was in Manchester yesterday and City boss manager Mark Hughes thinks a deal can be done.

He said: "We're very hopeful. We're obviously keen to bring him to the club if we can."

Chelsea, who are also looking to get rid of right-back Juliano Belletti, have already taken a massive loss on Andriy Shevchenko, who re-joined AC Milan this week.

Tottenham, who travel to Stamford Bridge on Sunday, are cautiously optimistic that they will be able to secure the signing of both Arshavin and Roman Pavlyuchenko by the end of the weekend.

Striker Pavlyuchenko is due to have a medical in London today before completing a £16m switch from Spartak Moscow, but Spurs are desperate to sign a second forward, so freeing Berbatov to join United.

They have been in protracted negotiations with UEFA Cup winners Zenit St Petersburg over Arshavin for the past two months and believe they have finally convinced them to lower their asking price.

Meanwhile, Chelsea should get a favourable draw in the Champions League this afternoon (5pm) as they are top seeds according to the UEFA coefficients.

They will avoid Barcelona, Inter Milan and Real Madrid, as well as the other English teams - who are also all in pot one.

Chelsea won't 'make a loss' as all player contracts (transfer values) are written down over a contract. SWP cost £21m over 5 years so after 3 years his book value is £9m. A transfer at that price or higher will lead to a gain. The wages are irrelevant as they would be paid if he stayed.
