Shaun Wright-Phillips: has rejoined Manchester City after a three-year stay at Stamford Bridge

Blues take £11m hit as Shaun Wright-Phillips rejoins City

Shaun Wright-Phillips today ended his miserable three-year spell at Chelsea and rejoined Manchester City in a £10million deal.

Wright-Phillips has signed a four-year contract having found himself surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge.

Standard Sport revealed in May that the England winger wanted to leave in order to get regular first-team football and Chelsea were happy to let him go even though it is for less than half the £21m they paid City for his services in 2005.

Wright-Phillips said: "Obviously I'm delighted to come back to City and I just can't wait to get started again."

Manager Mark Hughes added: "I've always admired him and he's certainly been a target of mine since I came to the football club.

"To actually secure the deal and bring Shaun back home is a fantastic coup for us and I'm sure the supporters will be just as excited as we are to have him back at Manchester City."

Chelsea manager Luiz Felipe Scolari told the club he only wanted to work with 23-24 first-team players this season and used the England international sparingly in pre-season.

The winger was left out of the squad in the victory at Wigan on Sunday and his departure paves the way for Brazil star Robinho to arrive at Stamford Bridge from Real Madrid.

Wright-Phillips, 26, who was also wanted by Portsmouth and Everton, was signed by former manager Jose Mourinho in 2005.

But he started just 43 League games for Chelsea and scored a total of only 10 goals in his three years at the club.

It is understood Wright-Phillips has agreed a deal worth around £70,000 a week, which is the same wages he was on at Chelsea.

The winger will quickly get a chance to come up against his old team-mates when City take on Chelsea at Eastlands on 13 September.

With the player gone, chief executive Peter Kenyon will step up his attempts to buy Robinho.

I wish SWP all the best, he is a quality player that ended up in a Chelsea squad that could field at least 2 full "A" teams. He will be an instant success at Man City and will be guaranteed games week in, week out.

SWP good profit move.
Do agents make these moves for themselves or clients?
For footballing reasons, its best to join a club where you would play majority of games or sit on the bench and struggle to get into the team!
