Recovering: Lee Westwood will have little time for match practice ahead of the Ryder Cup later this month

Westwood: I'm okay for Ryder Cup

Evening Standard   9 Sep 2008

Lee Westwood today confirmed he will be fit to play in the Ryder Cup despite suffering a serious bout of tonsillitis.

The 35-year-old caught the virus last month when he was competing at Gleneagles and has not played since.

He missed last week's European Masters and will also skip the Mercedes-Benz Championship in Cologne this week leaving him little time for match practice ahead of Europe's clash with the United States in Valhalla, Kentucky, this month.

But a spokesman for his management company said: "Lee is slowly recovering from the illness and we're sure it won't affect his chances of taking part in the Ryder Cup."

Westwood has proved a key player in his five appearances in the competition.

In his 25 matches since his debut in 1997, he has won 15 points.
