Outburst: Sergei Rebrov's remarks have sparked a racism row

Spurs slam Sergei Rebrov for racist jibe

Tom Collomosse, Evening Standard

Tottenham today defended their local community after Sergei Rebrov's astonishing outburst about "dark-skinned people" threatening crime around White Hart Lane.

Ukraine international Rebrov, who failed to make an impact in his three years at the club, sparked a racism row by warning new Spurs striker Roman Pavlyuchenko to avoid walking in the area near the ground.

Rebrov told Russian magazine Football Weekly: "A lot of dark-skinned people live there. So naturally the crime rate is higher than anywhere else.

"It is not nice to be a robbery victim. So I suggest that Roman doesn't walk but drives around that area."

But Spurs were quick to distance themselves from Rebrov's remarks.

A spokesman said: "These comments have been made by a player who is no longer with the club.

"We do not tolerate discrimination of any sort at the club, on or off the pitch.

"Tottenham has been at the heart of the local community for 126 years, and our passion on the pitch is shared with the passion we have for the borough."

Making such an association between colour and crime is unforgivable.

This country has battled long and hard to push this sort of abhorrent view out of mainstream society.

Not only is it deeply damaging but it's also wholly inaccurate.

Sure Tottenham has it's problems just like any other inner city area of London but to paint it as some sort of no go area is unbelievably ignorant.

People's percepetion of crime or 'fear of crime' is largely caused by fear drummed up by media specualtion or in this case by deep rooted and baseless prejudice.

Rebrov should be ashamed.

As usual anyone who expresses a non PC attitude is racist.
If that is what he see's and feels then thats his view, which, at one point, he would have been entitled to express.
Now, as he has mentioned the colour aspect it's racist.
If he had made the comment about white people in Liverpool, no one would have mentioned anything!!
As we all know you are not allowed to make any connection between 'minority groups' and anything negative.

Fuzzy you are a complete doughnut if you think that Rebrov's statement was not a racist comment. All it shows is that you are just as racist as Rebrov is. I'm glad that the Club has publicly condemed the comment. If Rebrov did not mean to make it a racist comment why did not just say the area is high in crime with making any reference to "dark skin people". For the record I doubt whether Rebrov ever saw a high proportion of "dark skin people" when he came to the ground on match days since most of the people attending the game would have been white. He hardly would have been walking to the grounds at night to have seen all these "dark skin people", how many footballers do you see walking around the grounds?!

Fuzzy, am afraid I completely disagree with you spinning what Rebrov said. You almost seem like you are condoning it. He is reported to have said "A lot of dark-skinned people live there. So naturally the crime rate is higher than anywhere else". A ten year old even knows what that means, and I assume you are older than that. "Crime", "dark skinned people", and "naturally"? What does that tell you? When was the last time he set foot at Tottenham, and for that matter when was the last time you did? More 90% of all crimes in Liverpool are committed by Whites, and that's on police records. Can I add the word "Naturally" TO "Whites". As for Tottenham, do you have any records of dark skinned people commiting crimes? Rebrov said that because they have a phobia to anyone dark in Eastern Europe due to the problems with th Roman (gypsy) people. If he had such a problem at Tottenham, why did he not let the club know about it.

I went to my 1st game in 67, SPURS V MAN UTD, and was a regular every year untill 5 years back when we moved to Canada, I come over and attend a few games every year, and visibly Tottenham has become a very run down decrepid place, of course the left wing touchy feelies will take Rebrovs statements and make them into a race issue, but lets face the truth, on leaving the stadium after the game, you would not want to be waiting for a bus at 1030pm at seven sisters, or walking to WHL station alone, as a seven year old kid from Hackney I could walk almost 5 miles to and from the ground for an evening match, which I often did, would I think of doing it now as a grown man? would I hell, I will leave with the 30,000 other mainly anglo saxon guys as quick as possible, its too bloody dangerous to be alone in the area, hey, but do not let the truth get in front of a good story, vocal minority, respond and tell us how since 1967, when it was still a working class area, ie, slums, it has now become so dangerous?

everybody that matters in england think its racist, rebrov better stay outa UK, here we get along without killing each other like georgia, russia, chchnia, ukraine stives...

Of course it's a racist remark, because it is made in public and is seen by Rebrov as a reasonable and truthful description of an area of London. The piece goes on to make similar remarks about Croydon - this time made by Smertin ..... Both of them could as readily have ommitted the references to skin colour had they wished to do so, but were busy asserting a necessary association between crime,
and skin colour.

"A lot of dark-skinned people live there. So naturally the crime rate is higher than anywhere else.

You think thats not racist Fuzzy? You are a prat! Do you think comments like this are needed in society.

- T, North London

I personally dont think what he said is all that bad, and I dont think he is all that racist from those words. There are alot of people near WHL with dark skin, that’s fact 1 and nothing about that is racist. Secondly the crime rate in areas like that all over the world are higher. That’s not to say it’s the fault of the inhabitants, but government who let the areas rot and leave the people with a lower standard of life than “whiter areas”. It is authorities who are racist and Rebrov is just stating facts. Tottenham is a total dump, and I think it’s fair enough for him to warn a player from a similar culture to his what he should expect. Of course he’s stupid though doing so in public because these days with people forgetting what racism actually is and media just telling people to see it everywhere, it was always going to be trouble. I will not be joining the chorus of Rebrov is a racist because the newspapers headline the article as such. Dont stop thinking for yourselves.
