FA demand investigation into Croatian racist abuse aimed at Emile Heskey

Warwick Jordan, Evening Standard

The Football Association have submitted a report to FIFA asking them to investigate allegations of racial abuse aimed at Emile Heskey during last night's game in Zagreb.

Croatia fans at the Maksimir Stadium were heard making monkey chants towards the Wigan striker after he was booked, which he described afterwards as being made by "ignorant people".

A spokesman for the FA said today: "We can confirm that we will be making a report to FIFA about the racist chanting. It is unacceptable for anyone to be subjected to racial abuse and we will be asking FIFA to investigate this.

"The FA and England team are determined to do all they can to eradicate any form of racism from football and society."

Croatia were ordered to pay a small fine for racist abuse from their fans during a game against Turkey during Euro 2008.

They could escape a heavy punishment this time as the chants were made by only a small section of the crowd.

But the Croat fans do have form when it comes to racist abuse towards Fabio Capello's side.

Their fans directed monkey chants towards black players when the teams faced each other in Portugal during the Euro 2004 finals, and were specifically warned that a repeat could cost their side Euro 2008 qualifying points when the teams met in Zagreb in 2006.

Piara Powar, a director for the anti-racism campaign Kick It Out, said: "Their fans are being monitored for incidents of racial abuse and evidence of far-right activities.

"A number of preventative initiatives are under way with Croatian fan groups, the more progressive of whom understand the damage these types of incidents do to the country and its people.

"Longer term, we are involved in a European campaign to ensure to all governments, football associations and clubs know what political and educational action they need to take."
