Conduit
Classic hopeful: Conduit wins the Gordon Stakes at Glorious Goodwood

Conduit can finally end Stoute's Leger hoodoo

John O'Hara, Evening Standard

Conduit can do what the likes of Shergar, Shernazar and Quiff all failed to do and that is provide Sir Michael Stoute with success in the Ladbrokes St Leger (3.10) at Doncaster tomorrow.

The brilliant trainer has had five runners-up from 25 contenders in the oldest Classic but Conduit is set to finally break his duck.

The colt would be the most improved horse of the year if he lands this £500,000 Group 1 contest, as on his first outing of the season he ran off a handicap mark of only 79.

Conduit caught everyone's eye on Derby day when winning a competitive handicap by six lengths and would surely have followed up in the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot but for meeting interference.

His victory in the Gordon Stakes at Glorious Goodwood over a mile and a half did little more than prove his wellbeing but tomorrow's extra two furlongs will play to his strengths as his pedigree is stamina laden.

Conduit's regular partner Ryan Moore has deserted him to ride stablemate Doctor Fremantle due to the soft ground but that has opened the door for Frankie Dettori.

The Italian has an outstanding record in the St Leger having won it four times and his patient approach will be ideal for Conduit, who is best when coming with a long, late run.

The Classic has proved a profitable ally to punters with 10 of the last 14 favourites obliging and Aidan O'Brien will be hoping Frozen Fire can maintain the sequence.

But the Irish Derby winner has not run since his Curragh triumph in June and that is a worry.

Ralph Beckett's Look Here bids to emulate User Friendly, the last filly to complete the Oaks and St Leger double, though a recent training setback doesn't inspire confidence.

Unsung Heroine is the only other filly in the race but is up against it to maintain her unbeaten record.

So Conduit can finally break Stoute's St Leger hoodoo and land the only British Classic to elude him in his long and illustrious career.
