John Terry and Mark Halsey
Red outrage: John Terry (right) is sent off by Mark Halsey

Boost for Chelsea as JT wins appeal

Evening Standard   16 Sep 2008

Chelsea captain John Terry was today cleared to face Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday after winning an appeal against the red card he picked up at rivals City.

Terry was dismissed at Eastlands on Saturday after bringing down City striker Jo as the Brazilian threatened in the 77th minute.

Referee Mark Halsey deemed it a professional foul and showed Terry the red card, but Chelsea protested and yesterday submitted a claim for wrongful dismissal.

Jo still had a long way to go to goal when the foul came in from Terry, whose fellow defender Ricardo Carvalho was in close attendance.

An independent regulatory commission heard the appeal today and the Football Association revealed they upheld Chelsea's claim, meaning Terry must no longer serve a three-match ban.

The England skipper leads the Blues tonight in their opening Champions League group encounter with Bordeaux at Stamford Bridge.

John Terry fully deserved the sending off. This decision stinks and suggess favouritism. Everything to do with the Premiership is becoming a farce!

I am absolutely disgusted by this. You cannot downgrade a red card to a yellow on appeal. Everyone would agree that the minimum punishment would be a yellow card. As you cant downgrade the card, the red had to stay. Its typical that the England captain is dealt with in this fashion. It stinks.
