Wilson too tired for Belfry bid

23.09.08

Oliver Wilson played only two matches on his Ryder Cup debut but the Valhalla experience was so draining he has withdrawn from this week's British Masters tournament at The Belfry.

His decision leaves title-holder Lee Westwood and Graeme McDowell as the only two members of Nick Faldo's side in the £1.8million tournament.

"It's a big decision because it's my home tournament and I know quite a few people who were going to come and watch me," said Mansfield-born Wilson.

"I don't think I can give it 100 per cent this week.

"Yes, it was only two matches I played but they were 14-hour days. I'm worn out. I'm still reliving it and it's hard to switch off. I can't afford to go and not play well.

"This way I can rest and prepare for the Dunhill Links. My goal is to qualify for the US Masters next April and one big week in Scotland can get me there."

Wilson partnered Henrik Stenson to a foursomes victory over Phil Mickelson and Anthony Kim but he was then beaten by the brilliant Boo Weekley.
