No defence: Lee Westwood lost on the third hole of a play-off

Westwood misses out

Evening Standard   29 Sep 2008

Lee Westwood is up to second on the European order of merit but not as close to leader Padraig Harrington as he had hoped.

Westwood failed to retain his British Masters title at The Belfry when he lost on the third hole of a play-off against Spaniard Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano.

After failing to hang on to a three-stroke lead with 10 holes to play, he said: "I didn't feel under control at any point and paid for it. I plugged away and tried to graft it out."

With Harrington's lead down to just under £180,000, Westwood added: "I made some inroads, but I am still missing a win this year."

Five weeks remain in the race and both are playing at this week's Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland.

Ryder Cup team-mate Sergio Garcia also ended up losing in a play-off.

He was beaten by Colombia's Camilo Villegas after letting slip a five-shot lead going into the final round of the Tour Championship in Atlanta.
