Manchester United confirmed today that Paul Scholes with be out for 10 weeks with medial ligament damage but the club still await news of the injury Wayne Rooney picked up in the match against Aalborg.

Both players were hurt during last night's win in Denmark, where Scholes lasted just 16 minutes.

Alex Ferguson initially thought the midfielder would be missing for about eight weeks but after being assessed by club medical staff today, it became clear the damage is even worse.

Scholes is set to be out until the visit to Tottenham on 13 December, so will miss the rest of his side's Champions League Group E campaign plus 10 Premier League games, including those against Arsenal and Manchester City.

It is a blow for Ferguson, though he has plenty of cover — despite the fact Michael Carrick and Owen Hargreaves are currently on the sidelines as well.

Rooney, meanwhile, limped off after an hour having given United the lead. After the game Ferguson said: "Wayne felt his ankle. We hope it is not ligament trouble — but he is doubtful for Saturday's game at Blackburn."

Rooney's injury is also a worry for England head coach Fabio Capello, who is due to name his squad for the World Cup qualifiers with Kazakhstan and Belarus on Sunday.

Manchester United at least should be able to count on a full-throttle Cristiano Ronaldo again after the Portugal star completed the full match, setting up £30.75million signing Dimitar Berbatov's second goal.

It seems he has now settled down after summer speculation over a move to Real Madrid, and the winger confirmed: "I feel very comfortable now. I played my first game two weeks ago and all the fans appreciated me. I feel very good within the club."

Berbatov's double, his first goals for United, also pleased Ferguson, who said: "It will be a great confidence booster for him.

"As a striker, you always want to get an early goal after being transferred for such a large amount of money."
