Elton John calls on Watford board to quit

Evening Standard   1 Oct 2008

Elton John, a lifelong Watford fan and former chairman, today called on the board to quit.

Chairman Graham Simpson and Lord Ashcroft, the club's largest shareholder, are looking to sell the club and John, the multi-millionaire singer-songwriter who was chairman during Watford's heydey in the Eighties, issued his statement only hours after a 3-2 defeat at Burnley left the Hornets just three points off the Championship drop zone.

He said: "I must express my deep dismay about what is happening at the club.

"First, I must make it clear that the manager and the players have my full support.

"However, it is clear the playing staff has been left threadbare and, even now, I understand there are plans for further sales.

"The chairman and leading shareholders have made it clear they wish to sell the club. Confidence must be brought back, [along with] a real sense there is a future in the club.

"If the directors do not have that optimism, then they should go."

Elton John is absolutely spot on. We need to get rid players such as Jobi McAnuff, an overpaid, overrated prima donna. Rock on Elton
