Howard in cup rally cry to Everton

Evening Standard   2 Oct 2008

Tim Howard has urged his Everton team-mates to "stand up and be counted" tonight if they are to avoid a double dose of cup misery.

Everton face the galling prospect of being knocked out of two cup competitions in the space of eight days.

After being dumped out of the Carling Cup by Blackburn last Wednesday, nothing less than a win will do against Standard Liege if Everton are to reach the group stages of the UEFA Cup.

It is a tall order for David Moyes's men after they drew 2-2 in the first leg of the first-round tie at Goodison Park.

Standard are three points clear at the top of the Belgian Pro League with five wins and a draw. Contrast that to Everton, who have shipped two goals per game this season and are struggling for consistency.

Howard said: "We have to put a lot of things right — we are under no illusions. We can't just snap our fingers and be out of it but it's important we now stand up and be counted.

"It would be awful to be out of two competitions so early on in the season."

Steven Pienaar and Victor Anichebe are both available after recovering from injury.
