Scots go for Iwelumo

02.10.08

Chris Iwelumo could become only the third black player to represent Scotland after he was called up for next week's World Cup qualifier against Norway.

The Wolves striker, who was born in Coatbridge and is half Nigerian, played for Scotland B in last year's 1-1 draw against the Republic of Ireland.

This is his first inclusion in the senior squad and he will be hoping to emulate West Ham's Nigel Quashie, Scotland's last black player in 2006.

The first was Andrew Watson, who captained the team to a 5-1 victory over England in 1882.

Iwelumo was Charlton's top scorer last season, but was sold for £400,000 as part of cost-cutting measures.

The 30-year-old has been a success at Wolves, scoring eight goals in seven matches.

Scotland boss George Burley said: "You are looking for players in form. Chris comes into that category."
