Pompey to report Spurs over Sol Campbell abuse

Portsmouth will make an official complaint to the Football Association over the "filthy" abuse Sol Campbell received during Sunday's match against Tottenham.

The defender, a hate figure at Spurs since he joined bitter rivals Arsenal in 2001, was subjected to racist and homophobic taunts by visiting fans at Fratton Park.

After Campbell's team won 2-0, his boss Harry Redknapp said: "It's a disgrace. People chant filth, it's nothing to do with football. Some of the stuff that goes on is completely out of order."

Today, Portsmouth confirmed they will take the matter further and said: "After discussions with Sol Campbell, we will be making an official complaint to the FA concerning the abuse aimed at him during Sunday's match.

"Both Sol and the club feel no player should be subjected to personal abuse of this nature and that it has no place in football.

"The club will be urging the FA to look into this as a matter of urgency and will co-operate fully in any investigations which take place, either by the FA or by Hampshire Police."

The police initially said they would report the matter to the FA because it was not possible to make arrests due to the sheer numbers chanting.

However, on Wednesday, they announced they would launch their own investigation after they received a complaint about the abuse.

Former England defender Campbell left Spurs on a free transfer after nine years and he then spent five seasons at Arsenal before joining Portsmouth on another free transfer.
