Peter Crouch: I knew I'd be back in England shirt

Evening Standard   7 Oct 2008

Peter Crouch today predicted Liverpool's loss will be England's gain after forcing his way back into Fabio Capello's squad.

The striker, who was omitted from last month's trip to Croatia, quit Anfield for Portsmouth in the summer and has since seen his form revived by playing regular first-team games at Fratton Park.

Ahead of England's clash with Kazakhstan on Saturday in which he is expected to be on the bench, Crouch said: "I always said when I was at Liverpool I wasn't playing as many games as I needed. I always felt confident that when I was playing regularly I'd score goals and do well enough to be in the England set-up.

"Now I am doing that and it's proving me right at the moment but I've just got to keep that going.

"I am not the type of person who would sit there and sulk or throw my arms in the air. I would rather get down and do the business for my club. The manager has proved in the past, he has left players out at times, but if they've played well, worked hard and done well at club level they will be straight back in."

Crouch is joined in the squad by Portsmouth team-mate Jermain Defoe, with whom he has struck up a good relationship. He added: "We have been lucky enough to set each other up and we play well as a partnership. It certainly helps that we play together."

Crouch's fellow absentee from the 4-1 win in Zagreb, Steven Gerrard, is also back with England and there are reports he will be paired with Frank Lampard in central midfield at Wembley.

Asked about the partnership which has so far failed to sparkle at international level, Lampard said today: "We [he and Gerrard] haven't really done quite what we could do over the last couple of years.

"We have been playing at a high level for our clubs and people expect the same for England and it does not always happen.

"But more important is to talk about the team, the Croatia performance shows that when we play as a team that is what is important."

Lampard knows Kazakhstan will try to frustrate England and that could affect the attitude of an expectant home crowd.

"It is a task to break them down but once you have broken them down you can go get the result you want," said the Chelsea midfielder.

"For any team you have periods feeling comfortable playing away and periods when you feel comfortable playing at home.

"Hopefully, with the confidence which came from the Croatia game we can show our intentions from the start of the game and I think the fans will respond to that."

Four of the squad missed training this morning including John Terry who has a back problem. The England skipper was joined on the sidelines by Ashley Cole, Wes Brown and Stewart Downing.
