David Bentley: We have turned into a joke

9 Oct 2008

David Bentley has admitted that Tottenham have become a laughing stock.

Spurs have claimed just two points from their first seven matches their worst start to a season since 1912 and Bentley told the Sun: "I know people are having a laugh at the fact we are bottom but it's up to everyone at the club to stop the jokes.

"We're not happy with what has been happening. You cannot hide from the situation but what we need are a team of leaders who take responsibility.

"We have more than enough good players to get us out of this situation and I give my word that we will."

Tottenham Hotspur a joke ? Yeah guess we are. Or perhaps more accurately the current squad, current board are the real problem. The poor manager has little power to decide on the type of players required and wanted. Never mind recently, history suggests the board kept faith in Bent, rather than Defoe....... now come on does that seem like good judgement.

All great teams in history have at least one if not to REAL LEADERS. Enforcers who not only "scare" the opposition, they also put fear into team mates who do not give the effort required in matches, and oh yes in training too. Ask the players of the Dave MacKay era, consider the effects of Roy Keane, Graeme Souness, Kenny Burns, Billy Bremner, to name but a few..........

Now look at Ledley, or JJ. Hardly "earth movIng". Ok Joey Barton might be "just a thug"... but so was Kenny Burns until Cloughie gave him responsibility, believing in his ability to mould into a leader. Dave Mackay was not a talented as Glenn Hoddle, but I know who I would be first on my team sheet week in week out. Come on lets get one in very very soon.

I think you guys and your manager really need to implement a strategy that works. Play to your strenghts and the opponents weakness. There is plently of talent and skill within the team to lift yourselves out of the predicament that you find yourselves.Spurs really do need some hard men in the team. The areas lacking the most is the central defence(Dawson just does not instill confidence)and the main strike force(both stikers are impotent in front of goal) their movement is also static so that makes marking them easy. What amazes me the most though is the lack of ideas and innovation.

All Spurs players need to go back to basics and start performing and giving 100%!
