Michael Ballack has told England not to get carried away by their stunning 4-1 victory over Croatia and believes they still have a lot to prove.

The win earned comparisons with the national team's 5-1 demolition of Germany in Munich seven years ago, where Ballack played for the hosts.

That rout had many expecting England to go on to win the World Cup in 2002, but they have not gone beyond the last eight of a major tournament since then and failed to qualify for Euro 2008.

Ballack feels England could be making the same mistake of getting overexcited by one performance again and said: "It's amazing how the mood of the whole country can change after one good game. But it's only been one game. They need to keep it up.

"It was really interesting to see how the mood has changed after the Croatia win.

"You can see it in the players: it's a different atmosphere when you come back after such a win. The last two years were often difficult for them."
