Dave Strettle
Out for two months: Harlequins wing Dave Strettle

Strettle is suffering for fancy footwork

13 Oct 2008

England wing Dave Strettle has admitted his pace and running style are the main reasons for his metatarsal bone fracturing for the third time.

Strettle was in outstanding form for Harlequins until this latest setback but he has now been ruled out for nearly two months.

Just when he was hoping to regain a place in the England senior squad he is about to start yet another rehabilitation process.

Quins started their Heineken Cup campaign with a hugely encouraging 29-22 win at Scarlets and Strettle will again be a spectator when they face Ulster at the Stoop on Saturday.

He said: "Basically, the way I run, and the way I side-step, I put so much weight through the outside of my foot, the fifth metatarsal, that it comes under so much stress.

"So, it's going to be a case of not changing one thing but adjust a lot of things, possibly my running style and boots."

Dean Richards, the Quins director of rugby, saw his team turn their fortunes around in Wales after a poor first half and were worthy winners.

"We knew at half time we could get back into it," said Richards, "They could never play with the same pace for 80 minutes, while we couldn't play any worse than we did in that first half.

"We kept the scoreboard ticking over and we took our tries well. We controlled the game in the second half and played some great rugby."

London Irish and Saracens had big wins in the Challenge Cup. Sarries defeated Mont de Marsan 53-3 while Irish hammered Rovigo 78-3, scoring 12 tries.
