Charlton are close to swift £50m

Tom Collomosse, Evening Standard

A Dubai company could seal a £50million takeover of Charlton this week.

Zabeel Investments, a group owned by the Dubai royal family, will begin a detailed examination of Charlton's accounts after chairman Richard Murray said he would recommend the indicative offer' to the club's shareholders.

Zabeel has pledged to wipe out Charlton's £20m debt and provide funds to strengthen the team although one of the key concerns for the group is likely to be the squad's wage bill, which is understood to be one of the highest in the Championship.

Murray expects events to move swiftly, and the takeover could even be finalised this week.
Zabeel's interest is rumoured to have been nurtured by Tony Jimenez, who left his executive role at Newcastle last week. Jimenez had been in Dubai trying to find a buyer for Newcastle.

Zabeel executive chairman Mohammed al-Hashimi said: “The passion of the fans, the heritage of the club and the unique status that Charlton enjoy in the community make it an exciting proposition.”
