New champ Alvaro Quiros inspired by Ballesteros

20 Oct 2008

Alvaro Quiros claimed Seve Ballesteros was the inspiration behind his three-shot victory in the Portuguese Masters.

The Spaniard won £675,000 - the biggest cheque of his career - after holding off European order of merit leader Robert Karlsson and former Open champion Paul Lawrie at Vilamoura.

Spanish golfing great Ballesteros is seriously ill and Quiros said: "I drew inspiration from thinking about the way he played his golf. Seve still is an inspiration for all of us. He was something special."

Karlsson now only leads Padraig Harrington by around £246,000 in the money list heading into the Volvo Masters, when victory for the Swede would have almost certainly make his Europe's No1 for 2008.
