India clinch record win over sorry Australians

Ricky Ponting was forced to admit his team had been outplayed in every department after Australia suffered a crushing defeat in the Second Test against India in Mohali today.

The Aussies lost their five remaining wickets on the final morning to be bowled out for 195 and lose by a record 320 runs. India's previous biggest winning run margin in Tests was 280 against South Africa in Kanpur 12 years ago.

It was only Australia's second defeat in 28 Tests since their 2-1 loss in the 2005 Ashes series against England. Both reverses have come against India.

"We were outplayed," said Australia captain Ponting. "In batting, bowling and probably in fielding as well.

"Right from the first morning India were aggressive and took the momentum away from us. We've been under pressure and fighting from the start. They deserved to win."

The Aussies resumed on 141 for five but any hope they had of avoiding going 1-0 down in the four-match series disappeared when left-arm paceman Zaheer Khan grabbed three wickets in four balls. Khan struck in the first over of the day by knocking back Brad Haddin's off stump before the wicketkeeper had added to his overnight score of 37.

In his next over, Cameron White edged an attempted drive low to India's captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni behind the stumps and Brett Lee was bowled first ball.

Australia vice-captain Michael Clarke, who added 84 runs for the sixth wicket with Haddin, put on another 50 for the ninth with Mitchell Johnson before leg-spinner Amit Mishra caught and bowled the tailender for 26.

Clarke was eventually last man out for 69, pulling Mishra to mid-wicket. Mishra finished with match figures of seven for 106 after claiming five wickets in the first innings on his Test debut.

The Third Test starts in New Delhi a week tomorrow.

Aaron Redmond scored a Test-best 79 as New Zealand inched towards victory against Bangladesh in Chittagong. Chasing a target of 317, the Kiwis took their overnight score of 145 for two to 212 for four by lunch on the final day.
