Gavin Mahon admits the next Queens Park Rangers manager will be expected to immediately turn them into promotion contenders.

Rangers will this week step up their search for a successor to Iain Dowie who was axed after just 15 games.

Midfielder Mahon said: "Since the new owners have come in the expectation has gone through the roof. They want success. I know the chairman [Flavio Briatore] said he's got a two or three-year plan but I know he wants it sooner than that because he's an ambitious man."

Charlton were left rueing a late Luke Varney miss in the 1-1 Valley draw with Burnley after Svetoslav Todorov's first goal of the season cancelled out Steven Thompson's opener. Todorov said: "He is disappointed as anyone would be when you miss a chance. I told him he mustn't worry about it because it is just part of the game. The way to respond is to score in the next game."

Crystal Palace defender Paddy McCarthy played in the 2-2 draw at Blackpool despite a shoulder injury after Jose Fonte had to pull out with a back problem. He said: "Obviously it wasn't ideal but with Jose carrying an injury it was a case of just getting on with it."

Watford lost 3-2 at home to Wolves and boss Aidy Boothroyd wasn't happy with his defence. He said: "At the minute we're absolutely all over the place defensively."

Millwall manager Kenny Jackett admitted his players were outclassed in the first half of their 3-2 defeat to Scunthorpe. He said: "I was proud of the way we didn't give it up and almost got a point, but they deserved to be two up at half-time."

Leyton Orient manager Martin Ling was upbeat after the goalless draw at Yeovil. Ling said: "We dominated possession for long spells and won the corner count."

Brentford drew 1-1 with Shrewsbury but were boosted by the news defender James Wilson wants to extend his loan stay from Bristol City. He said: "I have loved it here. Hopefully I can come back in January."

Barnet lost 1-0 to Exeter but Paul Fairclough believes the club are close to going on a run of results. The boss said: "We are starting to turn our season around. I can't signal anyone out for not pulling their weight."

Dagenham & Redbridge were no match for Darlington as they lost 3-0 to the promotion contenders, who scored through Liam Hatch (2) and Jason Kennedy.
