Stanford series in doubt after ECB launch inquiry

England's cricket bosses are to hold an urgent review into the $20million Stanford Super Series after accepting it has turned into a public relations disaster.

Giles Clarke, the chairman of the England and Wales Cricket Board, will arrive here on Friday, as planned, to watch Kevin Pietersen's team take on Sir Allen Stanford's side in a Twenty20 match worth around $1m a man to the winners.

But Clarke and chief executive David Collier, who has been in the Caribbean all week, are understood to be concerned with the way the event has unfolded and effectively turned into one big ego trip for Stanford.

The Texan billionaire has been at the centre of attention all week, with the cricket matches — also involving Middlesex and Trinidad — often appearing to be of secondary importance. Stanford was even forced to apologise to England captain Pietersen and wicketkeeper Matt Prior after being caught flirting with the visiting team's wives and girlfriends.

Pietersen admitted today that he just wants the week to be “over” and that he is no longer bothered about the money. “We are not blind to the criticism of the event,” said an insider. The wider concern at Lord's is that the original objective of the week has been overshadowed.

Clarke and Collier will begin their review this weekend and further discussions are certain to take place back in London next month.

Although the idea of England players earning a huge amount of money has caused negative comments, Board members are more concerned that other spin-offs from the week — such as trying to revitalise cricket at all levels in the Caribbean — have received no publicity.

It would not matter too much if this week was a one-off event. But England have signed up to a five-year Super Series deal with the American and also agreed he should bankroll an international tournament at Lord's.

On top of that, there are plans for Stanford to enter his Caribbean team in the England Premier League once that starts in 2010.

Whether any of these deals are in jeopardy after what has happened this week is unclear. But Lord's bosses will be shuddering at the thought of Stanford having such a high-profile presence every time he appears on the cricket scene.

A million dollars per man for playing 20/20? Totally obscene!

Having watched the Stanford Circus and also the India Australia Test Match it is notable that the standard of cricket in the Test Match is far higher than the circus and the Test Match makes better viewing. Please sell the TV rights for Stanford to Setanta as the series is not about cricket.
