On track: Septimus impressed in his final workout

Draw on agenda as Cup D-day looms

The final decision on the participation of both All The Good and Yellowstone in Tuesday's Emirates Melbourne Cup will be taken tomorrow when the pair have to convince Racing Victoria's chief veterinary officer Paul O'Callaghan that they are fit to race.

Saeed Bin Suroor says All The Good will need a "miracle" to make the line-up while Yellowstone failed to satisfy O'Callaghan in a fitness test today.

It is obviously D-day for the British-trained duo but for everyone else it is B-day, as the barrier draw takes place for the Cup and, surprisingly for a two-mile race, it is the hottest debate in town.

Francesca Cumani, assistant trainer of Mad Rush and Bauer, is hoping "the barrier gods look kindly on team Cumani" while Johnny Murtagh is looking for a middle draw for his mount Septimus.

Even triple Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Glen Boss was getting in on the act and, after riding Profound Beauty in her final serious gallop ahead of the Group 1 contest, even suggested the draw could determine whether the Dermot Weld-trained filly stays the distance.

Profound Beauty impressed work-watchers at Sandown today but Boss was left hoping for a low draw tomorrow.

He said: "Today was a real good blow out, she's a lovely big strong mare. She's got a great gait, she's fit and very sharp.

"If anything she could be a little too sharp maybe the distance might be a query.

"You've just got to be mindful of the draw for her that's the main thing.

"I think if she can draw a low gate she'll see the trip out. If she draws wide and she has to do a bit of work, I fear that may drag it out of her."

Murtagh partnered Septimus in his final workout also at Sandown and trainer Aidan O'Brien was happy to see the five-year-old gallop past stablemates Honolulu and Alessandro Volta at the end of a 1,200 metre spin.

He said: "Johnny was just going to get him relaxed in behind. They were rolling to the furlong, then he lengthened without being asked too aggressively. We were very happy with that."

Murtagh added: "He finished off nicely. I hope I draw between seven and 15. He's a straightforward horse."
