Relishing the challenge: England's Danny Cipriani

Cipriani the target in Wallabies battle plan

Australia have vowed to stop Danny Cipriani in what the England star believes will be a “ferocious” clash at Twickenham.

The London Wasps outside-half kicked 19 points in last Saturday's win over the Pacific Islanders and opposite number Matt Giteau is relishing the challenge of shackling England's new rugby hero.

Giteau, who made his debut for the Wallabies aged 20 at Twickenham in 2002, said: “I do have a plan to stop him, but I won't be telling anyone. Maybe after the game I'll say whether my plan worked or not. They've got a new backline and they look like they love to attack, so that's something we need to be wary of.

“He's obviously got a very good kicking game, he directs play very well and he's an elusive runner who can pass the ball very well on both sides.

“A lot of their attack rolls around their nine and 10, like most sides. So I think he's very pivotal on how the side plays and I'm looking forward to playing him.”

Lock Nathan Sharpe also pinpointed Cipriani as a potential danger and said: “The guy's immensely talented, controls the team very well and is important to them. I'm not sure we've paid any one guy more attention than another but we've got areas we are keen to do well in.”

Australia have lost four of their last five matches at Twickenham and England have been their bogey team at the last two World Cups, and Giteau admits there is a real hunger to put the record straight.

Tomorrow's encounter will be the biggest challenge so far of Cipriani's burgeoning Test career and the 21-year-old is predicting a bruising encounter.

He said: “It is going to be a ferocious game. It is going to be massive. When I was younger I used to watch the big three (Australia, New Zealand and South Africa) when they came over and I used to look forward to watching it, never mind playing in it.”

Cipriani rated his performance against the Islanders at just five out of 10. Against Giteau, who ranks alongside Dan Carter as the best fly-half in Test rugby, Cipriani will be able to judge just how ranks on the world stage.

“You find out what you are about when you play these guys,” said England manager Martin Johnson.

“I am glad Danny marked himself low. It means he has expectations of himself to play a lot better. We have expectations like that as a team.”

While he was entirely at fault for the charge-down which led to the Islanders' early try, Cipriani knows he must up his game against the Wallabies.

He said: “There is a lot for me to improve on, things like communication with scrum-half Danny Care and inside-centre Riki Flutey.

“I think we have a better understanding of how we can move forward and hopefully I can help the guys do that.”
