Gloves are off: Heurelho Gomes with goalkeeping coach Hans Leitert, who has been sacked by Spurs

Coach axed after Gomes blunders

Tottenham have taken drastic action to halt Heurelho Gomes's shocking run of goalkeeping blunders.

Boss Harry Redknapp has terminated the contract of coach Hans Leitert and is thought to be keen on replacing him with David Coles from his former club, Portsmouth.

Brazilian Gomes was at fault for the opening goal in last weekend's 2-1 defeat by Fulham, with Redknapp saying afterwards that "Hans has to get inside Gomes's head".

Austrian Leitert, who has agreed a settlement package with Spurs, previously coached at Recreativo de Huelva in Spain and was only appointed by the club's former director, Damien Comolli, six months ago.

Coles is widely credited with England No1 David James's return to form during his time at Portsmouth.

However, Pompey chief executive Peter Storrie and manager Tony Adams are likely to put up a fight to hold on to the 44-year-old.

Gomes joined Spurs from PSV Eindhoven in the summer for £7.8 million but has so far struggled to regain the form which won him international recognition.

Redknapp has resisted the temptation to drop Gomes in favour of Spanish keeper Cesar Sanchez, who has only made one appearance for the club, coming on as a substitute for Gomes in the League Cup win over Liverpool. Redknapp has also recalled reserve keeper Ben Alnwick from a loan spell at Carlisle.

Our keeper is awful so we sack his coach! We need to invest in a replacement & a new number two. However, as we spent a fortune on acquiring Gomes, I think we will peservere!
