Martin Johnson: Cips must handle the pressure

Martin Johnson has told Danny Cipriani he must learn to deal with the criticism and pressure of being England's key player.

Cipriani was the target of a wide-ranging attack from former South Africa coach Jake White this week in the build-up to tomorrow's clash with the world champions at Twickenham.

White, who coached the Springboks to glory in Paris last year, has taunted Cipriani with jibes about his celebrity lifestyle alongside girlfriend Kelly Brook.

There has also been criticism of the London Wasps No10's defence after the 28-14 defeat by Australia last Saturday.

As a result, South Africa are certain to single him out as a target but England manager Johnson said today: "Danny is 21 and has to deal with things like that - and it's New Zealand next week.

"You have to learn to handle these situations because the Six Nations is a seven-week tournament of intense rugby.

"People want instant stars and instant results and there is a massive expectation on him. This is only Danny's fourth start in Test rugby.

"He made two breaks against Australia and also some mistakes but 40-cap players also make errors. It's about getting consistency, cutting down those mistakes and making the most of the opportunities he gives us."

Cipriani has been putting in extra kicking practice with Dave Alred, the man who turned Jonny Wilkinson into a world beater.

Johnson said he had no problem with Cipriani using extra coaching help as he was also working with Jon Callard, the RFU's official kicking guru.

Why are there three different stories on here all about Cipriani? His last England performance was woeful, and we can clearly see he has fallibilities that will take a long time to sort out.
