Wembley temptation for Ricky Hatton

24 Nov 2008

Ricky Hatton hopes to crown his career in front of 100,000 fans at Wembley next year with a mouthwatering fight against Oscar De La Hoya.

Hatton put himself firmly back among the elite of world boxing with his 11-round dismantling of New York's Paulie Malignaggi in Las Vegas at the weekend.

Defeat to Floyd Mayweather Jnr, followed by an unconvincing win over Juan Lazcano in May, had cast doubt over the Mancunian's future. But now Hatton has proved emphatically that, at 30, he is far from finished, he has turned his attention to a possible bout with De La Hoya, who takes on Manny Pacquaio at the same MGM Grand venue on 6 December.

"My dream would be to have it at Wembley, without a doubt, and it's a strong possibility," he said today. "Oscar's never fought in Britain and he's said he'd like to tick it off on his resume of what he's achieved.

"We got 58,000 at the City of Manchester stadium for Juan Lazcano. If we can't get a 100,000 at Wembley for Oscar De La Hoya, then I'd be very surprised."

De La Hoya is president of Golden Boy Promotions and the company's chief executive, Richard Schaeffer, says a Hatton fight is a possibility.

"We are looking at staging it at a big stadium in the UK," he said. "But the arena needs to be covered because of the unpredictable weather.

"Oscar against Ricky could be the biggest event in boxing. It would be two great fighters, who come to fight and are loved by the fans.

"The winner could then fight Floyd Mayweather Jnr, who, of course, has already boxed both fighters."
