Going for the win: Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas

Arsene Wenger admits win at Stamford Bridge is compulsory

28 Nov 2008

Arsene Wenger has warned that victory at Chelsea on Sunday is a must if Arsenal are to win their first Premier League title since 2004.

The Gunners travel to Stamford Bridge lying 10 points behind joint leaders Liverpool and Chelsea, having already lost five League games this season.

Arsenal have already beaten Manchester United and Wenger admits his team will have to continue that form to ensure their title challenge does not end before December.

"We have dropped down to fifth place, but I don't believe that is too significant at this stage," said the Gunners boss.

"It's down to us redress the situation quickly. We are in a situation where we want to win against the big clubs because if we want to come back into it that will be compulsory. The media are ready to make definitive judgements but we are strong enough to deal with that and we have to show that."

New captain Cesc Fabregas shares his manager's belief that a revival is possible.

The 21-year old said: "There is so much still to play for this season. It's true we are 10 points behind the leaders, but sometimes if you recover a few points quickly you can put the pressure on.

"On Sunday we go to Chelsea, which is an opportunity to get some points back, then Liverpool is soon afterwards, and things can change quickly."

Despite the Gunners' precarious situation, the Spaniard vowed they would go on the attack.

He added: "We always go to win and I'm sure a club like Chelsea will do the same. Every time I've played against them they've always tried to go for the victory. We expect the same on Sunday.

"They have been playing really well at home. I haven't watched a lot of the games but the times I have seen them they have played some very good stuff I respect them a lot, but will we see."

what a load of bull, whats the point of beating chelski, loserpool & manure and then lose to hull and stoke.changes are long overdue in the playing staff dare i say management as well. wenger needs strong minded (as well as physically-strong) players, mickey mouse nancy boys will eventually flounder against the physical might of the other teams. perhaps wenger really is blind.
