Froch: I can be next Brit king of the ring

David Smith
02.12.08

Carl Froch today insisted he can become the premier name in British boxing, writes David Smith.

The 31-year-old, nicknamed the Cobra, challenges Canadian Jean Pascal for the vacant WBC world super-middle championship in Nottingham on Saturday with one of the two men set to suffer their first career defeat.

Inevitably, Froch believes he can emerge victorious. "It's all set up for me," he said.

"People will have to get behind me after I win that belt because there's going to be a void at the top if Joe Calzaghe and Ricky Hatton retire next year.

"I know winning the world title on terrestrial television could make me mainstream. I'm a good boxer and I entertain. I don't play safe. I try to decapitate my opponent and the fans love it."

Froch is already in the twilight of his boxing career and he still hasn't won a world title. If he fought Kessler he would get badly beaten so I don't expect him to deliver much more before he finally retires
