Stefan Edberg, winner of six Grand Slam singles titles, is predicting Andy Murray will win a maiden Grand Slam title next year to confirm his place among the tennis elite.

Edberg believes the world No4's breakthrough could come as early as the Australian Open next month.

The Swede, appearing at the BlackRock Masters at the Royal Albert Hall this week, said: "Sometimes that first Grand Slam comes when you least expect it.

"While Andy has a great shot at Wimbledon with the support of the crowd, he could do it away from here and Melbourne is a real chance.

"Of course there should be big expectations for Andy and he has those for himself.

"He is setting things up for a great year because he has proved he can beat everyone. The only thing that can stop you is injury and he doesn't appear to be affected by that."

Edberg sees Murray's recent progress - a US Open Final appearance and back-to-back Masters titles - as confirmation the 21-year-old Scot is now one of the players to beat.

He said: "Andy has great hands and moves really well, which is very important. He has a good all-round game and he has gained a lot of momentum lately.

"Andy is performing every time he goes out on the court and now all he needs is that last step to become a Grand Slam champion.

"If he keeps going this way he will win a major, no question. Previous Slam winners have taken it step by step before lifting one of the majors.

"You cannot just burst on to the scene and do it. Tennis has been a two-horse race with Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal both fantastic players who have done a lot for the game.

"Now, the momentum has changed and there are question marks over Roger. And will Rafa stay No1 forever now that he has a few injuries?"

Edberg, 42, one of the most graceful serve-volleyers the game has seen, believes Murray should add this fast-disappearing tactic to his game.

He added: "The one who can develop a serve-and-volley game will really benefit and Andy has shown he can operate at the net."
