Gomes forces fans' jeers back down West Ham throats

After his recent woeful form, Heurelho Gomes could not have been surprised when jeers of derision cascaded from the terraces at Upton Park.

Gomes, from what has been seen in recent matches, is Spurs' Achilles heel, their weak point.

Yet if West Ham manager Gianfranco Zola had ordered his team to put Gomes under severe pressure, his command was studiously ignored by his team.

The Brazilian, in fact, had a much quieter night than he would have been expecting and his opposite number at West Ham, Robert Green, was the busier of the two keepers and had already picked the ball out of the net once when Gomes was called upon to really earn his money.

With just two minutes left and West Ham desperately trying to salvage an equaliser, their Australian captain Lucas Neill caught the ball perfectly with his left foot.

It looked for all the world like a goal as the ball arrowed through a crowded penalty area but Gomes not only saw it - he saved it.

That was not the end of Spurs' anxiety though because the ball ricocheted around the box until it landed at the feet of West Ham's Italian substitute David Di Michele. He caught it well on the turn but his shot went straight at Gomes, who clung onto the ball.

From there Spurs moved purposefully forward until Jamie O'Hara galloped forward at a retreating West Ham defence before cracking a superb shot past Green.

From what could have been 1-1 it was suddenly 2-0 to Spurs and there were no more jeers from the West Ham fans for Gomes - most of them were too busy walking out.
