First class stamps

Wayne Rooney will not face any disciplinary action over an apparent stamp on Aalborg's Kasper Risgard.

Over the years, football fans have grown used to petulant hacks, swipes and the odd high tackle. There is, however, still widespread condemnation when a player loses it completely and resorts to a stamp.

The following clips are just a tiny selection of the many incidents when an overpaid "role model" fails to cover himself in glory.

1 - Roy Keane versus Gareth Southgate

If you're going to show clips of footballers losing it, you might as well start with the master. Erstwhile Sunderland manager Roy Keane made a name for himself primarily by being an incredible, committed midfielder. Just ask Gareth Southgate, who probably still flinches whenever he thinks of Keano's studs bearing down on him at a rate of knots.

2 - Wayne Rooney versus Ricardo Carvalho

Wayne would probably have become a Beckham-esque national pariah for this stamp if a winking Cristiano Ronaldo hadn't deflected all the bile his way. Rooney's previous conviction for stamping saw England get dumped out of the World Cup. Clearly he didn't learn his lesson...

3 - Michael Ball versus Cristiano Ronaldo

Sir Alex Ferguson has said opposition players deliberately try to injure his star winger. Here, we see Michael Ball introduce his foot to Ronaldo's gut in the most brutal fashion at Eastlands last year. No wonder Sir Alex is so protective.

4 - Joey Barton versus Dickson Etuhu

A list of thuggish football incidents would be virtually meaningless without Joey Barton. Commentators across the land said Mr. Barton should have been arrested for the following flying stamp on Sunderland's Dickson Etuhu. As it happens, Joey did end up in the clink, though Dickson didn't have anything to do with it.

5 - Roy Keane versus Alf-Inge Håland

Back to the guru himself, it's captain crunch Roy Keane once again. This is probably Roy's most famous act of soccer skullduggery, and one that got him punished in retrospect after he admitted in his autobiography that it was entirely premeditated. This assault on Alf-Inge Håland isn't technically a stamp, but at the same time, it certainly isn't even close to being a tackle.
