Boo-batov: Dimitar Berbatov could be in for a prickly reception at Tottanham

Redknapp says boo-boys will target Berbatov

Dimitar Berbatov has been told to brace himself for a red hot reception when he returns to White Hart Lane tomorrow.

But Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp is convinced the striker will not face the cauldron of hate endured by Sol Campbell at Portsmouth in October.

Redknapp, then Pompey manager, criticised visiting Spurs fans who directed racist and homophobic abuse at their former centre-half.

That incident triggered a large-scale police investigation including the publication of photographs of 16 suspects this week.

Now Berbatov is set to come into the firing line when he returns to North London with Manchester United just four months after his controversial £30.75million deadline day move.

Berbatov, who has been struggling with an Achilles injury, looks likely to start on the bench and while Redknapp accepts the right of home fans to torment their former idol, he has warned the jeers must not step over the line.

"The fans pay their money and are entitled to boo," he said. "But what happened at Portsmouth with Sol was completely different and totally unacceptable. That was out of order.

"Getting a bit of grief is all part of the game but Berbatov won't get the same abuse as Sol did.

"It's not just Dimitar, former players get stick from fans everywhere. And as long as it doesn't become racist abuse or unacceptable in any other way then it's fine."

Berbatov's place at Spurs has been taken by Roman Pavlyuchenko, who has been told by forwards coach Les Ferdinand he must improve his English if he is to find his best form.

Pavlyuchenko has scored seven times in 15 matches since joining Spurs from Spartak Moscow in a £14m deal last summer, but has rarely shown the kind of form that saw him score three goals for Russia at Euro 2008.

The striker is having regular English lessons yet often relies on an interpreter to understand the instructions of the coaching staff and there have been reports today that Redknapp may try to sell him in next month's transfer window.

Ferdinand said: "It is important Pavlyuchenko embraces the language as quickly as possible. That will help him, strike partner Darren Bent, and the rest of the team."

UEFA have announced they will decide on Monday whether to charge Wayne Rooney over his clash with Aalborg's Kasper Risgard in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Risgard claimed the United striker deliberately stamped on him during the first half. UEFA confirmed this morning they will assess the incident, which was missed by referee Laurent Duhamel at Old Trafford.

A ban would rule Rooney out of the knock-out rounds in February but Sir Alex Ferguson refused to be drawn on the issue today. He told a press conference: "You are not getting anything from this club at all on Wayne Rooney."

Rooney's team-mate, Cristiano Ronaldo has been nominated for the FIFA World Player of the Year award.

The Portugal winger, who has already been crowed Europe's No1, is on a short-list which also features Liverpool striker Fernando Torres, Barcelona duo Lionel Messi and Xavi, AC Milan playmaker Kaka.

I don't think Berbatov will care when he gets the treatment from the boo boys. he seems to me to be the type who cares only for himself.

I hope he has a very bad game and the defenders take no prisioners when dealing with him. Getting his hair tossed would upset him.
