First look at Tottenham's new stadium

15 Dec 2008

Tottenham Hotspur today revealed the first images of the club's proposed new 60,000-seat stadium.

The Premiership club hope to build the new stadium on their existing site at White Hart Lane.

The designs have been developed by KSS, who worked on the City of Manchester Stadium.

Chairman Daniel Levy said: “The brief I gave the architects was to design an iconic stadium that would be one of the best in Europe. My over-riding priority is to re-create the terrific atmosphere we have at the current stadium, within a world class stadium that offers state-of -the-art facilities.

"This means designing a stadium which has supporters as close as possible to the field of play and not simply looking to chase headline capacity. Our fans will find themselves closer to the pitch than at any other comparable stadium in the UK. This design puts fan experience first.

"In addition to the stadium, we are designing great facilities within the overall masterplan that will add positively to the local environment and locality, components that can play a role in the regeneration of the wider area."

The new development will feature a club museum, shops and homes, new facilities for the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation and public space.

Levy added: "Development projects on this scale take a long time from the initial starting point to final completion. Any new stadia we have seen recently would have been designed at least eight to ten years ago. We are designing for our future and this stadium design has been described as the first of the next generation of stadia.

"This development is more than just somewhere where the team can play football. The Northumberland Development Project will deliver substantial investment for the future of the Borough and will benefit the community.

"It's about leaving a legacy for this great Club and, once delivered, I hope all our fans around the world will be very proud."

i love reading all the bitter arsenal responses on here , the stadium is obviously being built for atmosphere surely thats what matters now , look at the emerates , yes the emerates sold out to saudis funded by germans with no atmosphere , we sell out every home home game now and the atmosphere and whole tottenham experience is far more memorable for away supporters than any of the so called top 4 clubs , saying that can you call the woolwich wanderers a top 4 club anymore?

i think they should scrap the single tier stand, just make the stadium all the same, all the way round.if they do that,it will be a lot better.

putting all the arsenal v spurs rivalry aside, a new stadium is essential for the revenue of tottenham and future of the club. there is not a lot of room to just upgrade the lane. it is also unavoidable that a lot of modern stadiums will look alike so arsenal fans that say spurs are copying the emirates are just using one example in a long line of new stadiums that look like existing ones. as many people have said the emirates is remarkably similar to other stadiums. this just happens to be the most cost effective or perhaps fashionable design at the moment (not really sure why a lot of new stadia look similar but i presume it's one of those reasons). anyway i cant wait for the new stadium because (and this may shock arsenal fans!!)its so hard to get tickets for big games at the lane due to demand.

I just hope they've laid in enough piping to pump the contents of oxygen tanks into the stadium...there's not likely to be much atmosphere in there.

I'm a massive Spurs fan, but this design is an almost replica of the Emirates - if we're going to copy other designs, it should have been the Allianz in Munich.

Given the problems the new Arsenal stadium has created in gridlocking Holloway on match days one hopes that planning consent will like Westfield be based on funding upgrades to public transport infrustructure.

How about bringing back the Trolley-buses that ferried thousands to this ground for many years. While a link to and upgrading of White Hart Lane Station also needs to be done.

Remember, if they run out of funds at a critical stage they wont have a place to play!

i dont see the point of spending so much money on something so usless we already have a stadiam so what is the point of having two. why dont you save the money to bye some good player like roony/lampared/beckham because beckham is coming back to the premier leauge so why spend it on that stadiem you can get so mant things not just 1 thing so take my advice and use it carfully and if you dont use iit wisly i will not support tottenham

What a dull looking stadium. I can't beleive that unless you are a passionate football fan that this lump will enhance your view of Tottenham's chances of regeneration.

The rendering of the street view confirms a blocky and unattractive facade with poor proportions and inelegant lines. The clumsiness of the design means that if it is built as shown the new stadium will have an oppressive effect on the surrounding environment, overbearing the human experience at street level.

Sadly the architects have missed the opportunity to create a connection connection between the internal sporting events and the external environment. A very retrograde day for sporting architecture, how sad that the Tottenham client have not built on the wonderful design foundations of recent stunning sporting arenas in this country and abroad, ones that lift the spirits.

This appears to be corporate architecture at it's most pedestrian. Let's hope that it works better than it looks and that the sporting events played out inside are positive because I can't see the architecture itself contributing to the long term success of the redevelopment.

Simon, you may be suprised to learn that the substructure of the Emirates is exactly that of the Allianz Arena, it's just the superstructure (the above ground bit) that's different.

Im a massive Spurs fan also, but the most important thing for me is that the new stadium will be right next door, so we aren't really moving. Will still be a sad day when the famous old Lane will be torn down.

Any news on the naming rights yet, as Levy has already come out and said it wont be called White Hart Lane?

Lovely looking stadium..........Wow! for 60,000 as well!
Judging by the enormous impact Tottenham have had in the Premier perhaps the capacity should have been reduced a bit, to say, 10,000.
Excuse my laughing loudly as I am an Arsenal fan......

B Chajet, London:

Copy you, Arsenal? Sorry, but Tottenham isn't full of French Prima-donnas. It's hardly a copy, how different can you design one stadium to the next - seats and a football pitch, you do something different with the design.

I love the way all the gooners come out of the closet whenever there's a Spurs story. Shows what a big club we are and how worried they are about us. I can't say I find the design massively inspiring, but there are limitations and the big thing will be the atmosphere inside.

I never really thought Spurs had that many fans but then again you learn something new every day! Of course with the current situation it would be quite stupid to start a new stadium because you're just wasting money. then again spurs do it all the time look at Darren Bent 16.5 million. sorry not worth it. The stadium has already been said a no no for the 2018 world cup if we get it and the stadium is made. Wembley; Emirates Stadium; Stamford Bridge; Old Trafford; Proposed Stanley Park stadium; ELLAND ROAD; St James' Park; Stadium of Light; Villa Park; Proposed Bristol City stadium; Portman Road; Proposed Nottingham Forest stadium. I dont see this stadium on there so whats the point in spending millions if its only going to be used for some mid table side

It is a step in the right direction and could secure Tottenham's future: if it ever is completed, that is.

Seeing other clubs and the money escalate dramatically in the past 15 years, Spurs need a new stadium in which they can generate large chunks of cash in order to compete. Yet, the warnings of the past are plenty, of clubs who shelled out on a new ground only to fall through the divisions. For example, look at Southampton's St Marys and many other Championship outfits who are struggling.
