Spurs target Distin

16 Dec 2008

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp will step up his efforts to sign Sylvain Distin from Portsmouth next month to solve the club's defensive problems.

Redknapp is a big admirer of the Frenchman having signed him from Manchester City on a free transfer last year when he was in charge of Portsmouth. He beat Spurs to the 31-year-old's signature that summer, and is hoping his influence will again land the defender, who will be cheap as he has only 18 months left on his deal.

Redknapp has made buying a defender one of his top priorities because of his lack of options at centre-half.

Captain Ledley King is continuing to struggle with his knee problems and has not been able to play more than one game a week.

Jonathan Woodgate hurt his back against Manchester United and has proven injury-prone in the past.
