FA probe Alex for stamping on Cahill
Evening Standard 23 Dec 2008Brazilian defender Alex is facing a Football Association investigation after he appeared to stamp on Everton's Tim Cahill on what turned into a night of shame for Chelsea.
Skipper John Terry was shown a straight red card by referee Phil Dowd for a wreckless lunge at Leon Osman, while Frank Lampard, Michael Ballack and Ashley Cole were all booked for dissent as the Blues were held to a goalless draw.
Alex could now also be charged with violent conduct as TV replays show him standing on Australian midfielder Cahill in the second half - an incident missed by both Dowd and his assistants.
The FA are now expected to ask Dowd to re-examine the footage, which would almost certainly mean a three-match ban for the defender.
An FA spokesman said: "If a referee misses a particular incident, we can ask him to look at video footage of it and ask what he would have done had he seen it."
It was the first time that Luiz Felipe Scolari's team have failed to win away this season and leaves them a point behind leaders Liverpool at Christmas.
Scolari was so incensed by the performance of Dowd that he refused to speak at the press conference after the game but he knows he now faces a defensive crisis.
Chelsea will not appeal Terry's dismissal and he will now be banned for the next three games, starting with the home match against West Brom on Boxing Day and followed by Sunday's derby with Fulham and the FA Cup third-round clash with Southend.
With Ricardo Carvalho possibly not returning from his hamstring injury until the new year, there is a danger that Branislav Ivanovic will be the only recognised centre-half for Scolari to pick from. To make matters worse for the Chelsea manager, goalkeeper Petr Cech picked up a thumb injury late on in the match and had difficulty taking his gloves off because of the pain.
Cech hinted that Dowd may have been influenced by the home supporters when he sent off Terry and said: "It was hard for the ref to see exactly what happened. He had a split second.
"The crowd were behind him and there was a lot of noise. It makes it more difficult for the referee. He made a decision and we have to live with that.
"It's a pity we couldn't win. We could have been top of the league again but it's a good point.
"We have had other chances to go top but we have drawn some games. A lot of teams are dropping points this season and if we had won our games at home we could have been top with a gap."

Terry has been getting away with that type of tackle for years.

I notice that rooney and ronaldo do not get cards for handball, diving and lunging,Will they use the video when ronaldo had nowhere to go,against Chelsea,he was in his own half on the side line Lampard was a yard away and ronaldo dived.Lampard just stood and laughed.Of course ronaldo got his free kick,an utter disgrace.

There is absolutely no doubt that Terry had both feet off the ground and studs up.
It was a cast iron red card and if it was any other team outside the "Sky 4" or player we would not see such a fuss in the media.
All these overpaid prima donnas need to grow up and stop feeling they should get special treatment.

I think Terry probably had to go but the ballack booking was a joke - I counted Dowds steps and it looked like nine to me - and pretty short ones too.
I noted with interest that the fixtures that have received the most red cards in the Premiership hacve been between Chelsea and Everton, Liverpool and Everton and Man Utd and Everton - anybody but me spot a coincedence here?

what stamp? is this a joke? its ok for Cahil to go in tackle from behind but not ok for Alex to do a "soft" stamp which I dont think realy hurt Cahil that much, but that tackle could have resultd in a red card for cahil had Alex gone down. Pathetic is the word

What planet is Scolari on - the same one as Gordon Brown I think. Dowd got it exactly right on the sending off and the bookings, in particular Ballack. Well done the Ref.
