Teixeira cashes in on Yankee's spree
24 Dec 2008Big-spending New York Yankees have splashed out again, signing Mark Teixeira on a £120million, eightyear contract.
The 28-year-old first baseman was a free agent after leaving Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim at the end of the season.
With huge deals also handed out to free-agent pitchers CC Sabathia and AJ Burnett, the Yankees have spent £285m on the trio.
The Yankees now have the four highest-paid players in baseball - third baseman Alex Rodriguez, Teixeira, left-hander Sabathia and shortstop Derek Jeter.
Sabathia signed a seven-year contract for US dollars 161 million and Burnett inked a five-year deal for US dollars 82.5 million.
The frenzied spending spree comes on the heels of a season in which the Yankees failed to make the post-season for the first time since 1993 and sent a clear signal that the franchise intends to be the team to beat when they open play in their new stadium in 2009.
