You're supposed to be on the same team

29 Dec 2008

Stoke striker Ricardo Fuller did his team no favours by getting sent off against West Ham after appearing to slap his own captain Andy Griffin. But as these clips show, it's by no means the first time team mates have come to blows. Here are five of the best footballing bust-ups caught on camera:

Kieron Dyer vs Lee Bowyer
Tony Pulis must have been fuming when Ricardo Fuller got sent off against West Ham, but at least Stoke were left with ten men. When the delightful Lee Bowyer and Kieron Dyer came to blows in 2005 the pair were sent off leaving Newcastle with just nine.

Bruce Grobbelaar vs Steve McManaman
Tensions are always running high when it comes to derby day in Liverpool, as the blue half of the city takes on the red half. The Everton fans rammed into Goodison Park had particular reason to be cheerful in 1993, as they watched Bruce Grobbelaar and Steve McManaman turn on each other, while their team cruised to victory.

John Hartson vs Eyal Berkovic
West Ham were clearly taking their training seriously during the 1997/98 season, although Eyal Berkovic didn't appear to enjoy being kicked in the face by John Hartson. Harry Redknapp, the Hammers manager at the time, tried to play down the incident. Watch the video and make up your own mind…

Freddie Ljungberg vs Olof Mellberg
Representing your country is no guarantee that players will behave themselves, just ask Sweden. At the 2002 World Cup their team were happily training away when Freddie Ljungberg took exception to a hefty tackle from his captain Olof Mellberg. See the resulting fracas here …

Thomas Gravesen vs Robinho
Real Madrid may strive to play beautiful football, but that doesn't mean there are no ugly sights on the training ground. In 2006 Fabio Capello was managing Real Madrid and his team were on a pre-season training camp in Austria. But if the trip was meant to boost team unity, things didn't seem to be going too well when Thomas Gravesen and Robinho fell out.
