Arsene Wenger: I still believe we can dominate the season
Simon Johnson, Football Correspondent30.12.08
Arsene Wenger still believes Arsenal can dominate the Premier League this season, despite Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United being firm favourites to battle it out for the title.
Arsenal lie in fourth place in the table, 10 points behind leaders Liverpool and with no games in hand, but Wenger is convinced his side only have to improve a little to bridge the gap to the top of the League.
The club, who have not won the Premier League title since 2004, have beaten both Chelsea and Manchester United this term, however, they have also lost to Fulham, Hull, Aston Villa, Manchester City and Stoke.
Wenger is expected to strengthen his side during the January transfer window and he has already been linked with Zenit St Petersburg's Andrei Arshavin and Liverpool's Xabi Alonso.
Arsenal's chances have already been dismissed by many pundits, but Wenger believes he will have the last laugh in May.
He said: "I'm convinced that we are on the right track. We are not missing 10 per cent, we are missing one or two per cent. We can get that one or two per cent easily and then we can dominate the league.
"I'm disappointed that the team is not getting the praise or the respect it deserves at the moment, but we have to keep going. We will keep going with this spirit and we will turn people around.
"Getting that final per cent or two is down to being a bit more relaxed and composed when the situation calls for it. Looking to his New Year's resolution, Wenger added: "My hopes and aims for 2009 are to support this team. I believe strongly in this team and if they get the support I think they will be rewarded in 2009 because they deserve it.
"They have talent and I'm sure they will be rewarded."
Meanwhile, Cesc Fabregas is hoping Arsenal will ease the pain of his knee injury by staying in contention for three trophies while he recovers.
Fabregas is expected to be out for four months after suffering a medial ligament injury against Liverpool and has gone home to Barcelona to begin his recuperation. However, the prospect of still having the chance of winning the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League this season is giving him cause for optimism.
He said: "My recovery schedule is not very exciting. I went to see the surgeon in Barcelona before Christmas and I'm going to stay for a month before I can start having a bit of treatment.
"I cannot move my right leg right now or really do a lot - I'm generally just staying on the sofa or the bed at home and resting my leg up.
"While I recover I will be praying for Arsenal to do well and hopefully we will be competing in the league, FA Cup and Champions League when I return."
Arsenal striker Jay Simpson has signed a new long-term deal with the club, though he is set to be loaned out to West Brom next month.
The 20-year old is yet to feature for the Gunners in the Premier League but scored twice in his three games for them in this season's Carling Cup.

Where's Rob The Gonner when you need his Wenger like comments?, he seems to hide when things go wrong for his team.
Crooner, remember when Arsenal had the best back four in the land? Dixon, Adams, Keown and Winterburn, not an African or Frenchman in sight, hopefully the directors will see sense and get rid of the 'Whinger' and then poor old Pat Rice will not need a translater in the Arsenal dressing room

I am a great fan of Arsene and I agree with him- he who does not believe is dead. However, he needs to do something to revive the faith that the fans, the club and players have in him. He should spend to get in news tried and tested players if the money is there while the present crop of young players are gaining in experience.

I'm a great admirer of what Arsene has done for us but he's deluding himself. How many of the current first team would have made it into the side of 4 or 5 years ago? We're short a keeper, a commanding centre back, a ball winning midfielder and a wide player with pace who can beat people. Remember Seaman, Campbell, Gilberto and Pires? There's no good living in the past but it's not experience the current players lack it's ability. The past three seasons has been like watching a car crash in slow motion as a great team has been dismantled and replaced with inadequate and inexperienced 'potential'. Time to get the cheque book out Arsene and get yourself and Arsenal back where we belong - challenging for the title, not for 4th place.

oh isn`t the whinger good for a laugh,he really is cracking up,perhaps this is really what it is like in Wenger`s World, has he not seen his sides laughable defending in the last few weeks, his squad has not depth and the only player te have worth a real fortune is out for the season and might possibly leave at the end of the season also..even the most die hard Gooner will think it is going to be another trophyless year.
Apart from Mr Rob Gooner who probably thinks along the same lines as the amazing Wenger...Oh to be in Wenger`s World

Wenger has finally gone mad, Villa completely out played them in their last game, so where he is seeing this improvement is beyond me. Does he think United, Liverpool, and Chelsea are going to stand still. United haven't even got into their stride this season and have still got Chelsea, Liverpool, and Arsenal at home. The trouble with Wenger is he has been using Arsenal FC as his personal plaything for a few years now and is starting to treat the Arsenal fans with contempt.

Have you really forgotten the dog days of Berie Mee, the shear comedy that was Terry Neil, George Graham after 1991? Supporting for 40 yrs? 4o hrs more like. Another glory-hunter 'supporter' we can do without.
Arsene Wenger is Arsenal's greatest ever manager and the leading playing stylist in European football. So what if you don't win the league - that is just a chequebook challenge.
Take some pride in the quality of your product, not the win at all costs apparoach of chelski and man utd.

I think he needs to step away from the game and get his head together. His comments used to be so delusional they were funny - now I'm quite concerned for the guy's sanity. Seriously.

The manager is so inconsistent with his assessment of the squad. At the end of last season he said the team was a defensive midfielder and defender short of being top class but he never bought any yet Alonso, Inler etc were available. He needs to remember that Cesc flourished because he was introduced into a team with seasoned pros Vieira, Bergkamp,Henry, Pires, Gilberto etc. We no longer have that luxury and the sooner Wenger realises he needs a proper squad and more experience the better. Otherwise i am sick of the flimsy excuses we get each time the team does not deliver, its becoming boring. He needs to stop experimenting with his half baked kids and bring in seasoned pros that can stabilise the team and bring back the glory days to North London. Whats sickening is that he says the money is there but there are no players to fit the Arsenal style (another excuse). There is need for a settled first 11 teams will be terrified of, instead its the kids who dread facing teams like Bolton, Blackburn, Villa, Stoke which used to be fodder for The Arsenal in times past. Please Arsene be mindful of all the people who have been behing the team during the barren spell and do the right thing...Buy players and have a proper squad of at least 21 players who are ready to play at any time in any match.

I see when Arsenal gave another lead away to Aston Villa, Wenger went to the excuse book, aparantly Martin O'Neil had a chat with the ref at half time and he gave all the decisions Villa's way in the second half, I suppose Harry Rednapp did the same when Spurs came back to earn a draw with his second rate imports.
When will he put his hands up and admit that his side are no longer serious contenders for major titles any more, better he goes now, he was originally good for the club, but he has become 'The Whinging One' and English football will be better for his departure, maybe Arsenal will get some English lads in their team.

I have been an Arsenal fan for over 40 yrs and ive never experienced such inconsitent and poor form as now.Wenger has not won anything for over 5 years.I think he is more suited to be a talent scout. He is looking and now sounding a pathetic figure.Time to leave Arsene

I'm a massive Arsenal fan - I even cut short a foreign holiday in '71 to watch Arsenal in that year's cup final (Gunners 2 Scousers 1) - and I greatly admire Arsene - but I really can't see us winning anything this season, except maybe the FA Cup. If we can keep the kids we have in years to come then maybe we'll be in with a shout, but our squad lacks experience in depth.

Please Mr Wenger, please stop treating Arsenal fans like we're fools. Do you seriously think anyone believes this nonesense?!

I'm right with you, Arsene. Having watched M.Utd struggle to very poor 1-0 wins at home verus minnows and enjoyed the way Arsenal THUMPED them, Chelsea and Liverpool (with ten men), we're just a whisker away.
Just imagine what the team will be like when Djourou, Cesc, Song, Eduardo, Rosicky, Toure and England's new wonderboy Theo Walcott are available again and Nasri/Diaby are both fully fit. NO OTHER team in the EPL could sustain this level of player loss and still be challenging for the big three trophies.
Brilliant work too, Arsene, on identifying Vela, Wilshere and Ramsey as the three brightest young prospects on the planet. M.U. Chelski, Lpool go deep into debt and buy. You find and make the club secure. Is that water you're walking on?
Why don't you hysteria merchants come along to The Grove and ENJOY!

Whilst Arsenal’s team may have improved its performances and results over the last few games, it is laughable to suggest that it will dominate the league. I have the utmost respect for Mr Wenger, given all that he has achieved at the Club, but this statement is another case of his delusional outlook of the Club’s ability to seriously challenge for honours this season. Players such as Song, Denilson, Diaby and Djourou are simply not good enough at the moment and rather than give the impression to these players that they are better than really is the case, Mr Wenger needs to give them a serious kick up the rear end. This Arsenal team needs strengthening in defence and midfield before it can compete effectively against Man United - the quicker the penny drops for Mr Wenger the better.

Wenger has got something wrong because Arsenal are way behind the rest. The players are demotivated and lack enthusiasm.Wenger needs to change his approach and give chances to players like Simpson and not loan him to his opponents.
Wenger made several mistakes this season and its no use trying to find excuses. These are not the Arsenal we want to see, they lack everything that is needed to become Champions.

Wenger has at long last gone totally mad. As earlier this year when he said this Arsenal team was the best since he arrived !! - no seriously he did - stop laughing.
Time for the men in white coats

arsenal may not win the league but they are going in right direction they have a mortgage for their stadium apart frm that they dont have debts, like liverpool or man utd, even chelsea are in debt on their overall budget. wenger will have the last laugh in the coming years.
