FA cut prices in bid to boost home support

8 Jan 2009

The Football Association have cut the price of tickets for England matches in an attempt to increase attendances.

August's match with the Czech Republic was watched by 69,738 and manager Fabio Capello has been critical of the Wembley atmosphere.

The Italian was hoping for more support with his team currently being top of their World Cup qualifying group.

So the FA will reduce prices by up to 25 per cent for the remaining matches this season.

"We want to make watching the national team as affordable as possible during this difficult period," FA chief operating officer Alex Horne said.

The price reductions will apply to England's home matches, with World Cup qualifiers against Ukraine and Andorra and a friendly with Slovakia at Wembley.

This is a move in the right direction. We all know the FA have to pay for Wembley but prices for all football matches in this country are much too high. Young people in particular are being priced out of the stadiums. Groups of teenagers going to the match with their mates is becoming a thing of the past. This cannot be good for the future of the game. The FA and the Clubs need to be more imaginative with their pricing structures to encourage young supporters.
