Bell begins to toll for Aussie star Hayden

8 Jan 2009

Struggling Australia opener Matthew Hayden has been left out of the one-day and Twenty20 squads to take on South Africa as speculation over his Test future intensifies.

National selection panel chairman Andrew Hilditch said the 13-man squads for this month's matches were selected with an eye to the ICC World Twenty20 later this year and the 2011 World Cup.

At 37, Hayden is nearing the end of his career and Hilditch said that was the key factor in his omission, rather than his form during the three-match Test series against South Africa when he averaged just 19.50.

"This is a strategic decision made by the national selection panel as we plan for these signature events," he said.
