Sean shines but is in the dark over Cup heroics

15 Jan 2009

Sean Scannell scored a sparkling goal in Crystal Palace's 2-1 win over Leicester last night but wasn't even alive when his club left their mark on FA Cup folklore 18 years ago.

The Eagles winger was born four months after the south Londoners reached Wembley for an epic 3-3 clash with Manchester United, with Palace losing the replay 1-0. Scannell (right) admitted he was in the dark about Palace's Cup pedigree after sealing a hard-fought third-round replay win.

But the Irish teenager is determined to write his own chapter of Cup history when the Eagles visit Watford in round four. He said: "To be honest I didn't even know Palace had reached the Cup final - nobody told me!

"Maybe we can do it this year. It's funny because when I was growing up, I was concentrating more on playing than watching the game."

Scannell was given his chance after Victor Moses hobbled off injured.

And he made a huge impact just after half-time by slotting between keeper David Martin's legs.

Palace went ahead from Paul Ifill's 38th-minute strike while Leicester got a late goal through Max Gradel.
