Way out: Craig Bellamy looks set to move to Manchester City

Zola aims to cash in with Bellamy

19 Jan 2009

West Ham manager Gianfranco Zola has been assured he will be given any money raised by the sale of Craig Bellamy to strengthen the squad.

Bellamy's ill-fated 18-month spell at Upton Park looks over after the Wales striker was omitted from the squad that thumped Fulham 3-1 yesterday.

Tottenham and Manchester City have had bids turned down for a player the Hammers are eager to retain, but the 29-year-old is determined to leave.

Having being denied permission to speak to Spurs on Friday, Bellamy rejected the offer of a new contract and his departure looks imminent.

Zola still admires Bellamy but insists that if he is intent on going, it is in West Ham's interests to conclude any deal as quickly as possible.

"Craig wasn't in the squad because he wasn't in the right frame of mind," said Zola.

"I don't know what will happen - I don't know if he's played his last game for the club.

"I respect him and his attitude to me has been great, he always gives me 100%. He knows I like him as a player.

"Craig is a player that I value very much but if he doesn't want to stay there's not much we can do about it.

"If he's sold I will get the money to spend on other players. We are looking at targets.

"It's important that the situation is dealt with as soon as possible. There's no deadline but I need to get on with my squad."

Bellamy was not missed as in-form West Ham swept aside a lacklustre Fulham to amass their fourth victory in five matches.

David di Michele fired the opener after a dreadful blunder by John Pantsil only for a magnificent 30-yard strike from Paul Konchesky to level the score.

The Fulham left-back then hacked down Carlton Cole, allowing Mark Noble to pounce from the spot and man of the match Cole sealed the result 15 minutes from time.

Fulham boss Roy Hodgson refused to grumble after his side's nine-match unbeaten run was brought to a conclusion in comprehensive fashion.

"I thought West Ham were the better team and deserved to win," he said.

"All three West Ham goals came from our mistakes but I wouldn't use that as an excuse - we deserved to lose."

Hodgson expects England midfielder Jimmy Bullard to return to training tomorrow after recovering from a hip injury.
