Getting better: Harry Redknapp believes Wilson Palacios will improve the Spurs squad

Redknapp hails action man Palacios

21 Jan 2009

Harry Redknapp feels Honduras midfielder Wilson Palacios will bring a new dynamic to his Tottenham squad.

Wigan reluctantly allowed the 24-year-old to leave the JJB Stadium after agreeing what is understood to be a club-record £14million deal with Spurs.

With Palacios having also now completed his medical and brokered what are expected to be lucrative personal terms, the transfer will be rubber-stamped once a work permit has been obtained.

Redknapp has targeted improving the strength in depth of his squad as they look to fight clear of the Barclays Premier League relegation zone.

The Spurs boss - whose side tonight travel to Burnley looking to secure their place in the Carling Cup final at Wembley - believes Palacios has the sort of no-nonsense approach required for the battles ahead.

"We need to improve the squad and that is why I was interested in Palacios," Redknapp said.

"He will come in here and get after it and play aggressively. He will work and close and run. I feel that we need a bit of that around the place.

"Palacios is a player I have liked since I first saw him, and he has the ability to go on to become a top, top player.

"I just like the way he plays. He is an all-round modern midfielder - he gets after it, he is box-to-box.

"I speak to people who have played against him, like Frank Lampard, and no-one has had an easy game against him. He is after you all the time."

Redknapp missed out on West Ham striker Craig Bellamy after the Wales international instead opted to join the Manchester City revolution.

Spurs, though, are likely to make more moves before the transfer window closes and have been linked with former Everton defender Marco Materazzi, the Inter Milan centre-back, as well as a £1million swoop for Chelsea goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini.

Latics boss Steve Bruce, helped by a recommendation from Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, has overseen Palacios' progress after taking the player on loan to Birmingham from Deportivo Olimpo before signing him permanently when he moved to the JJB Stadium.

Bruce maintains Wigan did all they could to persuade the Central American to stay.

"The club record transfer fee will be smashed if the deal goes through, but that was never mine or the club's motivation here," said the Wigan manager.

"The club is not in the business of trying to make a profit on players. I want to build a winning team here and keep my best players together.

"We did everything we could as a club to keep Wilson. We sat down with him last week and offered him a very good new deal, and tried to convince him his interests were best served by staying here at Wigan Athletic.

"However, I am a big believer in not standing in the way of players' careers, as long as the terms are right for our club, and I wish him all the best.

"He has served the club well in his short time with us and has been a credit to both himself and the club.

"It is no wonder we have some big clubs enquiring about our players because they have done very well this season."

Bruce is hoping to finalise a deal for Colombia striker Hugo Rodallega later this week.

"I always said that my biggest challenge this month was to keep the squad together, whilst trying to add to it at the same time," Bruce continued.

"There are always tough decisions to make, but it is my job to make what I see as the right choices for the long-term good of Wigan."

I see Jenas's name has been mentioned as a possible partnership with Palacious in the middle. The options are obvious, either Zakora, Modric or Hudd. Jenas has had enough chances to prove himself and failed in all departments. Finaly we have a quality manager who saw this guy is useless

Rob Hotspurs, are you blind or just stupid. Our midfield is powderpuff stuff with no grit or gristle also we don't need a goalkeeper other than a number 2

I am afraid that Zakora has had enough chances and is simply not good enough. If Palacios can close and hustle and tackle as Harry suggests then he will be able to play with Hud or Modric or even Jenas in midfield allowing us to play with 2 wingers. So Zakora is on his way out of the Lane.

The reason we have signed Palacios is that the current CM's Spurs have aren't as good as him. Zokora, Jenas are both average at best, Modric has struggled in the premier league so I feel a player like Palacios, who is a box to box strong player is something Spurs have missed for a long long time.

For me Palacios and O'Hara in the middle of the park will be much better than what we currently have and will no doubt move us away from the relegation zone.

Hopefully, this wont prove to be the biggest waste of maoney since paying £16 million for Darren Bent. For the life of me I cant understand it, as we already have Zokora, Jenas, Huddlestone & Modric for the two central midfield positions, whilst we desperately need a goalkeeper, a decent left back & left sided midfield player.
